Testing international assistance during worst credible flood
Natural disasters exceed all bounds. When a flood strikes Europe, we cooperate to help the region in need. Good preparation is a necessity. There is a possibility that if a flood strikes Europe, the individual affected countries might be in need of international assistance.
Exceptional emergencies require exceptional approach. Proper preparations in case of certain events have been carefully undertaken by the individual countries. Even better preparation is accomplished through close cooperation with international partners. International cooperation is established on basis of thorough planning. Actual exercising of a worst credible flood scenario allows trusted authorities to test operational and strategic procedures. And therefore allows us to be even better prepared in case of emergency.
In September 2009, we will hold an exercise to test the coordination of international civil protection. To do this effectively, we will need expertise and effort from several organisations.
The National Operations Centre has been assigned by the Netherlands Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations to coordinate the EU Floodex 2009 exercise. The National Operations Centre's mission is to coordinate the civil protection assistance of several organisations during large scale incidents, disasters and events.
FloodEx is an EU co-financed exercise, in accordance with the Civil Protection Mechanism. Actual exercising of disasters affecting multiple countries is a necessity to improve European cooperation in the field of civil protection.
